How to reduce overwhelm with calligraphy
I know a busy, chaotic, mind all too well - in fact if you’ve followed me from the beginning of my calligraphy journey, you’ll know: an urgent need to support my mental wellbeing was what led me to discover calligraphy and it’s calming benefits.
Overwhelm can creep up on you and slowly take over your life, knocking you off balance. And soon we’re spinning in it by the end of our day or week.
When we’re overwhelmed, we’re often doing things that aren’t actually helping reduce the overwhelm, like:
• prioritising things that actually add to your busyness
• distracting yourself with unhealthy ways to numb the feeling
• telling yourself you don’t have time to slow down
• focusing more on others than yourself
Or, the easiest: just carrying on as you are *fingers-in-your-ears* hoping it all calms down soon… any of this sound familiar?
We then get into the spiralling of negative thinking, low mood, and feeling like you’re stuck in daily routines that aren’t serving you. This is often the turning point where burnout follows.
So what can we do to reduce it - or even better, prevent overwhelm?
• prioritising things that actually reduce your busyness
• creating small pockets of calm throughout your day that recharges you
• giving just five minutes a day to a creative practice
• putting yourself first
Or, the easiest: just changing one small thing, this week, today, or even right now!
Seeing the impact trying calligraphy, learning calligraphy and adopting calligraphy as a tool for my wellbeing - and many others - is what has led me to create this new free workbook: The Calming Calligraphy Workbook.
What if you made time to enjoy small pockets of calm throughout your day/week that recharges you?

Create your creative space
In order to reduce the stress, and activate your “calm”, it can really help to create a space just for you that engages more relaxing, happy hormones. So, I outline some of my favourite easy things you can try doing to help you set up, from what you can see, feel, taste and hear – a full sensory experience.
Then it’s all about just making your mark
We begin with getting connected to our pencil or pen, and paper. I guide you through some common strokes to practice - great for learning and improving techniques, and calming our minds.
Learn to create some lovely letters
A mindful moment simply tracing through each of the letterforms, making sure you’re breathing is deep and slow and added tips for creating and calming.
Learn to create some wonderful words
We then explore calligraphy through the seasons and reinforcing our new found calm with words to ease the day – this day, or any day. And there’s plenty of space to practice.
So whether you’ve got a pencil, crayon or full on brush pen calligraphy set, this is for you if…
…you’re struggling with a never ending to do list
…you’re focusing more on others than yourself
…you’re exhausted by the end of the day
…you feel uninspired and uncreative
